The name Kuna is inspired by history and symbolism, and is one of the rare world currencies named after plants and animals. In the Middle Ages, the fur of the kuna was used as a means of payment, and the first historical trace is recorded in 1018 in the town of Osor on the island of Cres, in the context of the Croatian local population. The fur of the golden marten, an animal of the Croatian forests, was highly valued in trade and commerce.
In the areas of Slavonia, Primorje (today’s Istria and Kvarner), and Dalmatia, a special tax called kunovina was paid with the fur of the kuna. The image of the kuna was also present on the first Croatian coin called banovac during the 13th and 14th centuries, precisely because of its trade influence.
After independence, the kuna became the official currency of the independent Republic of Croatia in 1994, when it was replaced by the Euro at the beginning of 2023 after almost three decades of stable value. Regardless of the change, many in the homeland still remember with a smile the purchase of sweets, chocolates and small gifts with these coins, especially in childhood.
One Croatian kuna was divided into one hundred lindens, inspired by a tree that the Slavs considered sacred, whose strength and elegance are part of numerous legends and folk tales.
The kuna is not only a symbol of the past, but has been a part of the Croatian identity for more than a thousand years. The image of the kuna is found on the coat of arms of Slavonia created in the late 15th century, now part of the flag of the Republic of Croatia as one of the shields on the crown of the Croatian coat of arms.
